Install IDLE on Fedora 11

IDLE is the Python IDE built with the tkinter GUI toolkit.

IDLE has the following features:

  • coded in 100% pure Python, using the tkinter GUI toolkit
  • cross-platform: works on Windows and Unix
  • multi-window text editor with multiple undo, Python colorizing and many other features, e.g. smart indent and call tips
  • Python shell window (a.k.a. interactive interpreter)
  • debugger (not complete, but you can set breakpoints, view and step)

To install IDLE on Fedora, simply type the following in your terminal as root:

yum install python-tools

python-tools is the Python package that includes several development tools that are used to build python programs.

After installation, you can now run IDLE from your terminal by entering idle, which should launch a window similar to this:

  1. Thanks for the simple (Easy to understand) instruction on where to go and how to do the job at hand.

I am new to linux and I decided to go with Fedora 17 as my platform and I have been going crazy (you know) run to google for everything! I have been going nuts trying to find, install, and use a GUI. All I kept finding was info on how bad fc17 was when trying to setup a GUI—HA,HA, DUHA…!

I have to go back now and share this with all the other (MEs) who are trying to do the same thing!

Thanks So Much for your Help!
    God Bless, Peace, Artie Caton…

  2. Randell, I am sorry, I never introduced myself. I am 56 yrs old, Fireman, well, was until I broke my spine. I am stuck living a life sentence in my own body. Pain is 24/7. Seizars, electrical shock and outragious burning! I can’t do much of anything so I decided to get away from WinDoze and try out Linux. I then found Fedora. For the longest time I used Fedora 8, I loved the way it turnwed any & All control over to the user intead of some company! I am now running FC17 and everything is great, but once I decided to try and become a programmer I got stuck! I have read up on TKinter and some 11 others. The info was just enough to leave you hanging out in no-mans land and then you were left with the famous “What Now?” So, Randell, thank you for your professional help, it took me some 24 seconds And It was installed, up, and running! Thanks to you Randell, I can now have a cigaretteand coffee!
